As my first award show, the 2014 BET Hip Hop Awards was a good place to start. This year the show was held at the Atlanta Civic Center.Snoop Dog better known as “Uncle Snoop” was the host. The show itself consisted of five cyphers plus a bonus first time live cypher, and nine performances. Drake surprised us with the most nominations coming in with eight followed by Pharrell, Jay Z, and Future all with six. The show doesn’t air until October 14th at 8 p.m. on BET, but checkout a sneak peak of the highlights from the show.
The Mike Brown tribute had to be the most moving performances of the night. Common performed his single, “Kingdom” with a choir assisting with backup vocals as well as Vince Staples. Jay Electronica also joined forces and delivered a verse while paying tribute to the St.Loius teen. Mike Brown’s parents also joined the stage as the performance came to an end. Remarkably the crowd joined the motion of hands raised high to the sky during a emotional moment of silence.
Of course everyone pulled out their best outfits to make their grand apparence, but one artist stole the fashion spotlight. Young Thug takes the award for best wardrobe of the night. During his performance for “Lifestyle” with Rich Homie Quan, he was dressed in a pair of stylish pink, ripped jeans, and an abstract button down. When T.I. hit the stage to perform “About the Money”, Thug’s outfit consisted of a dress and pants with a hooded poncho over it, stylish or what?
With the show being held in Atlanta of course Atlanta artists such as Migos, T.I., and Young Thug hit the stage, however it was Brooklyn rapper Bobby Shmurda who ended the show literally. Shmurda was the artist whom had the crowd all on their feet going bananas doing the “Shmoney Dance”. It was as if he owned the stage as he performed “Hot N—-“, with his entourage as well as Vine sensation Lil TeRio. Don’t forget to peep Uncle Snoop showing off his Shmoney Dance moves!
